An upper and a lower full denture (false teeth)

FEES

What dentures cost

Upper and lower dentures are separate dentures, so a full set is two. The price within the range depends on the type of denture.

If you have extras cover, we claim on the spot with HICAPS, so you pay only the gap on the day. How much your fund pays depends on your policy.

Your consultation ends with a written quote, before any work starts.

WHICH DENTURE

Which denture do you need?

Most new dentures take 2–4 weeks from your first visit to fitting.

ONE PRACTICE

Still have some of your own teeth?

A denture clinic can make your denture, but teeth that need treating or removing have to be seen by a dentist somewhere else.

Here, one practice does both. We check your teeth at the consultation, treat the ones worth keeping, remove the ones that aren’t, and plan the denture around what’s left. If teeth are coming out, we fit the denture when we remove them.

You get one plan, one quote, and one team responsible for the result.

NO TEETH LEFT IN A JAW

Full dentures

If you still have some healthy teeth, a partial denture that clips onto them is usually more stable than a full one.

How they stay in

An upper denture covers the roof of your mouth. Its edges form a seal that, with saliva, creates suction to hold it in place.

A lower denture sits on a narrow ridge of gum and has to leave room for your tongue, so it can’t seal the same way. Most people find the lower one harder to get used to. If yours won’t stay put, implants can hold it in place, and the denture clips on and off.

How they look

At the try-in, the teeth are set up in your mouth so you can judge the shape, the shade and how your lips sit over them. We change them before the denture is finished.

TEETH COMING OUT

Immediate dentures

If teeth need to come out, we scan beforehand and have the denture made in advance. We remove the teeth and fit the denture at the same appointment, so you leave with teeth.

There are two tradeoffs. There is no try-in, because the teeth being replaced are still in your mouth, so you first see the denture on the day. And your gums shrink as they heal over the following months, so the denture loosens and will need a reline once healing settles. Tooth removal and the reline are charged separately.

SOME TEETH LEFT

Partial dentures

Which type suits you depends on how many teeth you have left, where the gaps are and whether you are likely to lose more. You don’t need to decide before your consultation.

Example of a partial denture with a metal framework

METAL FRAMEWORK

Cobalt-chrome

A thin, rigid metal frame carries the replacement teeth. It is the strongest option and covers less of your mouth than plastic, so it suits a long-term replacement.

Tradeoff
Metal clasps can show on some teeth, and adding teeth later is harder.

PLASTIC BASE

Acrylic

A pink plastic base with wire clasps. Teeth are easy to add if you lose more later, so it suits a mouth that is still changing. It also works as a temporary denture during other treatment.

Tradeoff
It has to be thicker to be strong, so it feels bulkier.

NO VISIBLE METAL

Flexible

A bendable plastic with gum-coloured clasps and no visible metal. It is a good choice when a metal clasp would show on a front tooth.

Tradeoff
It is harder to reline, repair or add teeth to, and it doesn’t suit every gap.

ALREADY WEARING ONE

Denture repairs and relines

Repairs and relines are done on the same day by our local partner laboratory. Call us first so we can book it in.

REPAIR · $200–$300

Cracked or broken

Bring all the pieces and don’t glue them. You’ll need to come in, because the repair needs an impression of your mouth.

ADD A TOOTH · $200–$300

Lost a tooth

A replacement tooth can usually be added to your existing denture.

RELINE

Loose or sore

Your gums and jaw shrink slowly over the years, so a denture that once fitted works loose. A reline refits it to your gums, and costs less than a new denture if the teeth and base are in good condition.

NEW DENTURE

Worn teeth

When the teeth are worn flat or your bite has dropped, a new denture usually works better than a reline.

QUESTIONS

Common questions

Can I keep wearing my old denture while the new one is made?

Yes. You keep wearing it until your new denture is fitted.

Will I be able to eat normally?

Most people eat a normal diet once they’ve got used to their dentures, which takes a few weeks. Very hard or sticky food stays difficult, especially with a lower full denture. Implants make a lower denture steadier for chewing.

Will new dentures hurt?

New dentures sometimes rub in a spot or two during the first couple of weeks. If yours does, we adjust it at your follow-up visits, which are included in your fee.

Do you accept DVA cards?

Yes. Bring your card to your consultation and we’ll confirm what DVA covers for your treatment.

Can I have my dentures made at Dorrigo?

Yes. Denture appointments are available at both Coffs Harbour and Dorrigo. Implant treatment is done in Coffs Harbour.

How long do dentures last?

It varies with the fit, the wear and how your gums change. Bring your denture to your regular check-up. We check the fit and your gums, and tell you when a reline or new denture is worth doing.
